"The Government is acting to ensure Australia has an appropriate framework in place to safeguard our maritime industry, our international trade effort and the many Australians who travel through international waters every year"
Federal Transport Minister Anthony Albanese (LLDCN, 24/02/09)
Conference Overview
With extensive interests in seaborne trade and a coastline stretching thousands of kilometres Australia will always be a key region in global maritime operations. With 99 per cent of its exports transported by sea, the Australian economy is particularly reliant on the global maritime industry and safeguarding port and maritime operations against the threats of international terrorism is a crucial consideration for all maritime stakeholders.
Lloyd's List DCN is proud host the 6th Annual Port and Maritime Security in Melbourne on the 14th & 15th September 2009.
"For the first time this country will have a coherent statement of the national security challenges facing Australia into the future and the comprehensive approach we propose to adopt in responding to those challenges…Australia cannot afford a short-term, reactive approach to national security.”
Prime Minister Kevin Rudd (The Age, 4/12/08)
Australia has moved towards a more integrated security structure since our last event and the conference will address policy matters relating to national security, including enhanced co-ordination both nationally and internationally and the development of technology used in modern maritime security initiatives.
Against this backdrop, the current economic turmoil has hightened piracy’s growing challenge to the international shipping community. In response, Australia has strengthened its resolution to fight piracy by launching an international query into piracy due to be released at the end of September.
In 2009, the summit will again assemble a unique and esteemed faculty of domestic and international maritime security experts from government and industry. It will provide a timely opportunity to assess current issues and recent initiatives whilst facilitating the efficient interaction and cooperation between port operators, shipping companies and other key industries with government agencies.
